My friend needs relationship advice (seriously hes not made up)?

Ok, two of my best friends have loved each other ever since the second grade, and now its almost high school. I guess you would say the ';went out'; in the 7th grade even though they never went to the movies or anything. It seems they still love each other, they txt each other every day and night. I only know for sure that the guy likes the girl. What should I do? I don't feel like playing matchmaker since i've never went out with anyone. I would love to see them together, but the guy is too timid to ask the girl out. One of my other friends had helped them get together but he got busted for drugs and isn't at our school anymore, and is going to be grounded for the next 2 months (at least). well if they've been together since second grade, they may have something. If they already hang out but just don't like go to movies and such doesn't mean they aren't technically ';together';. One of them someday should ask the other out, be it the boy or girl. But if there just great friends and happen to be the opposite genders than they don't need to be going out. Hope that helps...
